New law requires colleges and universities nationwide to step up anti-piracy efforts!

The College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2008, which President Bush signed into law requires any institution of higher education receiving federal funding to commit to combatting illegal file sharing on campus. This law states that colleges and universities receiving federal funds must demonstrate that they have developed plans to combat unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material (including movies and music). This law is likely to force colleges and universities to actively crack down on file sharing. What are your thoughts?

I think GWB should just step down before he does any more harm to our civil liberties.

This topic is one that I can relate to. Last quarter I was not aware of how actively the school cracks down on file sharing until one day I got a surprise email stating that I can be sued up to 5,000 per song that I have downloaded. Mind you that not unitl a month before this incident, I had never used any type of file sharing. So I had to go to this hour long presentation explaining to me what the consequences are (I was completly scared out of my mind), take my laptop and have them connect to these gadgets that help obolish anything that is of file sharing. I learned my lesson. don't file share and if you do, do not get caught doing it at school.

I don't support illegal activities such as copyright infringement, but I don't support spying on citizens actions, either. I do support having the right to anonymously surf the internet; check out TOR. If you get confused with the program, grab your local friendly computer nerd a 6-pack and s/he'll undoubtedly be able to help you out with the set up!
