Irvine, CA is the largest planned community in the United States; it is suburbia at its zenith (or nadir depending on your point of view.). However, in the midst of this erstwhile Stepford community lies the University of California at Irvine. Colleges have generally been a hotbed for hormonal surges, pompous intellectualism, and total disconnects from the pressures of common existence. As a result there is a perpetual tension between the students of UCI and the surrounding town, which can be succintly summed to the question 'why in God's name does everything close before 10pm?!'.

You're in the OC- go to the beach. And if you dont like the beach, go eat at Alejandros in Newport on 17th street.

If you can get a car and a willing driver there are some really good shows (most nights) for free-cheap (often you pay a cover charge since you can't drink) in West Hollywood at the Roxy, Key Club, and other theaters. It's good if you like rock/indie/alternative, want to not spend too much $$, don't mind a little traffic, and don't have to get up too early the next day. Expect the place to empty out fast after the best band plays, allowing you to get home without distractions by ~1:00. My favorite recent shows at the Key Club have been by the Hollywood based band After Midnight Project. http://www.myspace.com/aftermidnightproject

I've wondered that same thing before..it's kind of hard to find stuff to do. You could go clubbing..if you're lucky you could find an event that's cheap. Tonight at Kolla's it's 5 bucks before 1030. There's also a 24 hour bowling alley about 15ish minutes away from UCI. It's called Boomer's, and its got an arcade and mini-golf place too. Other than that, I'm pretty stumped and I'd like to know of some better places, myself.

You can check out some interesting nonfiction books from Langon library or the Science library and read them at night. I'd suggest a history book of some sort.

Nightlife in Irvine is the best of the best. Since we are near Huntington Beach, UCI students may go there for a bonfire!
